50 Years of IDEA-December

December 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)—a landmark law that transformed education by ensuring equity, inclusion, and access for students with disabilities. The anniversary honors the progress made while highlighting the ongoing need for advocacy, particularly around the law’s chronic underfunding. In 2024, California served 876,250 students with disabilities from birth through age 22.

The October 2025 newsletter celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), highlighting its role in empowering students through individualized learning and strong IEPs. It recognizes various disability awareness months and key awareness days, while emphasizing the importance of student voice, self-advocacy, and collaboration in education. This month, Foothill SELPA honors five decades of progress under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)—a landmark law ensuring that every child with a disability has access to a free and appropriate public education. Our November focus, “Beyond the Classroom: Comprehensive Supports and Student Success,” highlights the critical role of related services—including speech, occupational, and physical therapy; counseling; and specialized transportation—in helping students reach their full potential. We also recognize National Family Caregivers Month, Diabetes and Epilepsy Awareness, and National School Psychology Week, honoring those who support the wellbeing and inclusion of all learners. Join us in celebrating this milestone by promoting disability awareness, inclusion, and appreciation for the dedicated professionals who make education accessible to every student.
